Pre-Conference events (14.05.2024)

16:00 – 17:30 (GET) 

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of guided tours, each offering a unique exploration of Tbilisi’s history, identity, and enchanting aspects. These options include:

  • Old Tbilisi Walking Tour: Immerse yourself in the ancient history of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, since the 5th century AD.
  • Tbilisi Religious Diversity Walking Tour: Experience the rich religious tapestry of Tbilisi by visiting key landmarks such as the Synagogue, Armenian Church, Catholic Church, Mosque, the Zoroastrian fire temple “Atashgah,” and numerous Georgian Orthodox churches.
  • Tbilisi Courtyards and Hallways: Journey into the opulence of 19th-century Tbilisi, exploring luxuriously adorned entrance halls that reveal the charming bourgeois urban lifestyle and evoke romantic memories.
  • “European” Tbilisi Walking Tour: Delve into the history of the German settlement of “New Tiflis,” explore Soviet and European architecture, and meander through the exotic Flea Market during this captivating walking tour.

18:00 – 19:30 (GET)

Each guided tour will conclude at the Georgian National Museum, offering a comprehensive exploration of materials that depict the natural and cultural history of Georgia, the Caucasus, and the Near East. The museum’s collection encompasses archaeological artefacts from the Stone Age, the renowned Golden Treasury collection, Christian and Oriental art, and themed exhibitions on periods such as the Soviet Occupation.

Post-conference travel opportunities

Georgia presents numerous opportunities for country exploration depending on the available free days. Tbilisi’s strategic location allows for convenient day trips to destinations such as the Kakheti wine region and the ancient capital city of Mtskheta. For those with an extended stay, the option to visit the seaside Adjara region or the mountainous Svaneti on the slopes of the Caucasus provides additional captivating experiences.
