Parallel Sessions III – 3.3 Citizen science and SDGs: supporting stakeholder dialogue for effective policy making

May 3, 2023 @ 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm

Antonella Passani, T6 Ecosystems, Italy

Our session will be dedicated to the relationship between Sustainable Development Goals, citizen engagement and policy making. In the session we would like to explore how relevant SDGs are in science communication and especially in Citizen Science (SC) and what are the challenges in communicating and working towards them.

This seems well alignment with the conference: the SDGs are a way of looking and trying to govern the complexity of our time and thier achivement asks for citizen involvement at several levels (such as behavioral change, data provision, etc).

Research results demonstrate that citizen science is “already contributing” to the monitoring of 5 SDG indicators, and that citizen science “could contribute” to 76 indicators, which, together, equates to around 33%. At the same time, effective and efficient monitoring of the SDGs will require better utilization of new data sources and data techniques (Daguitan et al. 2019) and non-traditional data sources.
