Venue: University of Luxembourg, Campus Belval, Esch-sur-Alzette

25 years of EUSEA — celebrate with us at #EUSEA26 in Luxembourg!

In Other Words and Other Worlds:

Confronting Assumptions for Better Engagement

For the #EUSEA26 conference, we will be heading to the heart of Europe, the beautiful country of Luxembourg.

Hosted by the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg National Research Fund, the conference will explore how Luxembourg’s unique position as a crossroads of cultures, languages and ideas can inspire new approaches to public engagement.

Why should you join in?

At our 2026 gathering, we will challenge the assumptions that shape how we work, often without us noticing. These may relate to language, interpretation, geography, evidence, resources or cultural context. Such assumptions influence how we learn, improve and share practice. In Luxembourg, we will draw on our collective knowledge and varied experience to question current approaches, rethink how we frame engagement, and consider what needs to change.

By listening, reflecting and learning from one another, we can address barriers more effectively and strengthen connections with partners and audiences. This, in turn, supports a stronger and more coordinated European engagement community.

EUSEA brings together people who want to improve the relationship between research and society. If you work in public engagement, science communication, or use participatory or transdisciplinary approaches, this conference offers a valuable space to exchange ideas and practice.

You will be part of a community working with researchers, communities, policymakers and other societal partners to co-create meaningful engagement. Through shared experience and discussion, the conference examines how these approaches can become more reflective, inclusive, and effective across diverse cultural and institutional settings.

There is no better place to host these conversations than Luxembourg. Situated at the centre of Europe, it is widely recognised yet often understood through assumptions about its history and identity. This makes it a fitting setting for open and thoughtful discussion. While we meet in a central location, our focus will extend beyond it, considering how engagement practices across Europe and further afield can be improved through a clearer understanding of different contexts.

About Luxembourg and Belval…

From cows to satellites, from steel to science — Luxembourg is full of surprises. This multilingual and multicultural country has reinvented itself from a steel powerhouse to a hub for finance, research, and innovation. With nearly half of its population born abroad, three official languages, and its role as host to key European institutions, Luxembourg embodies a distinctly international character.

Our venue, Belval in Esch-sur-Alzette, tells that story of transformation. Once dominated by the smoke of blast furnaces, today it is one of Europe’s most ambitious urban renewal projects. The preserved furnaces stand alongside the University of Luxembourg, research institutes, and cultural spaces — a powerful symbol of how past worlds can spark future ones.

Belval has become a vibrant meeting place where students, researchers, businesses, and citizens come together to share ideas and build new futures. It’s the perfect stage for this year’s conference: In Other Words and Other Worlds – Confronting Assumptions for Better Engagement.
