Crossing Oceans – Raising Our Sails

In a world where vast oceans both connect and divide us, where strong winds drive us forward and can force our sails in particular directions, we face a multitude of challenges and opportunities. These need courage, collaboration, resilience and sometimes, the need to change direction. The EUSEA Conference 2025, “Crossing Oceans – Raising Our Sails”, will explore how public engagement and science communication can navigate turbulent waters and changing tides.

On the beautiful island of Gran Canaria, we will collectively explore how to connect communities and disciplines, inviting proposals that delve into the complexities of crossing physical, cultural, and conceptual oceans. The themes below can guide your submissions – though we also welcome sessions with different perspectives relevant for your field:

1. Tackling Global Challenges Locally:

  • Navigating Global Challenges with Local Solutions
  • Public Engagement for Environmental Stewardship
2. Identifying Cliffs and Shallows.

  • Mapping Challenges in Public Engagement

  • Facing Obstacles in Science Communication

3. Mastering the Storm

  • Effective Engagement Strategies in Times of Turbulence
  • Innovative Engagement Methods to Master Rough Sea
4. Equipping the Crew:

  • Connecting Skills and Capacities Across Disciplines
  • The Importance of the Team: Ethics and Inclusivity
5. Setting Sails with Stakeholders:

  • Stakeholder Involvement in Crossing Oceans
  • Finding Our Direction: Collaborative Decision-Making

Submission Guidelines:

We encourage contributions from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Proposals should address the conference theme by exploring various facets of public engagement, such as cultural, socioeconomic, and disciplinary intersections. Share your insights, research findings, and best practices in science communication, citizen science, participatory research, and other engagement initiatives.

Proposals can be submitted in the following formats:

  • 8 Min Horizon Talks: Short, engaging presentations offering insights, researchfindings, or practical examples related to the conference theme.
  • 90 Min Scenario Workshops: Interactive and participatory workshops involving hands-on activities, discussions, or collaborative exercises. Focus on specific tools, methodologies, or strategies for effective public engagement.
  • 45 Min Dialogue Sessions: Sessions featuring multiple speakers and perspectives, with at least 50% of the time dedicated to discussion and reflection.
  • Poster Pitches: Visual presentations plus 3-minute pitches showcasing projects, research, or innovative ideas.
  • Networking Sessions: Ideas for interactive gatherings for newcomers or long-term EUSEA members who want to explore the growing EUSEA community.
