Call for Contributions open in October

For the Brave and the Bold!

Glasgow is not the place for the conventional; it is home to the radical and the sensational, and this is what we are hoping to bring to EUSEA27!

For those not native to Scotland, we may need to explain our conference title a little. Gallus is a Scottish slang word for someone who is bold, daring, cheeky, and mischievous. In a time where systems continue to work against communities, we are looking for initiatives that express tiny acts of rebellion and a little mild risk-taking to achieve small and large victories for the communities and audiences you serve.

We invite contributions from practitioners who are challenging established ways of working, experimenting with new forms of engagement, and finding creative ways to achieve impact despite institutional, political or financial constraints.

1. Here Be Monsters:

Scotland is supposedly home to unicorns, selkies, the Loch Ness Monster – even aliens. The power of folklore, traditions, and cultures does more than open a window onto the past. It helps us understand how we got to where we are now, and it brings the voices of native communities to the forefront.

2. Creative Disruption:

Great public engagement is often unexpected. We invite contributions that explore unconventional, playful or participatory approaches to engaging audiences, from creative formats and immersive experiences to innovative methods that challenge us and our organizations. How can experimentation, humour, and creativity help us connect in new ways?

3. Tiny Acts of Resistance:

Scotland is known for its reliance on what is fair and true, and sometimes this requires just a touch of rebellion. Tell us how you’re fighting for what’s right in your corner of public engagement.

4. Advocacy and Democracy:

A well-informed, politically active society is the backbone of democracy – and public engagement is key to building it. How are you activating your community and fighting for equity for all? Whether that’s through conversation, protest, or driving policy change.

5. Knowledge Valorisation:

We welcome proposals on knowledge valorisation in citizen science and public engagement, because great outputs deserve a life beyond the project that made them. We are keen to hear how your tools, data, or findings took on a second life.

6. Underdog Science Engagement:

Scotland loves a plucky underdog story. Share how you’ve achieved big engagement wins with tiny budgets, no institutional backing, or against the odds.

Submission Guidelines:

We encourage contributions from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Proposals should address the conference theme by exploring various facets of public engagement, such as cultural, socioeconomic, and disciplinary intersections. Share your insights, research findings, and best practices in science communication, citizen science, participatory research, and other engagement initiatives.

Proposals can be submitted in the following formats:

  • 8 Min Horizon Talks: Short, engaging presentations offering insights, researchfindings, or practical examples related to the conference theme.
  • 90 Min Scenario Workshops: Interactive and participatory workshops involving hands-on activities, discussions, or collaborative exercises. Focus on specific tools, methodologies, or strategies for effective public engagement.
  • 45 Min Dialogue Sessions: Sessions featuring multiple speakers and perspectives, with at least 50% of the time dedicated to discussion and reflection.
  • Poster Pitches: Visual presentations plus 3-minute pitches showcasing projects, research, or innovative ideas.
  • Networking Sessions: Ideas for interactive gatherings for newcomers or long-term EUSEA members who want to explore the growing EUSEA community.
  • EUSEA Marketplace – This year, we are piloting a new format, the EUSEA Marketplace, an opportunity for projects and organisations to promote services or products that would be of interest to the public engagement community. For more information and to express your interest, please click here.
